Buying Wizz Air Tickets Without Falling for Hidden Costs
Have you ever wondered if you managed to buy the ticket for the best price? Maybe you could save some bucks without needing the crystal ball to predict the future of the ticket prices.
Casual experience
Usually I open up my phone and go to some cheap flights scanner website. There are a lot of options out there:
I always buy tickets in Wizz Air app on the phone. Youâve got your boarding pass in the app available offline. And some promotions are available time to time.
I pick the destination where I want to go or just scroll through the cheapest option if thereâs something. Letâs say that I want to flight from Budapest to Milan on Apr 25 2024.
And here we are. The first thing that you notice is Wizz Discount Club and the huge difference in the ticket price.
The difference is almost 40% on the flight ticket, and that just for the outbound.
Is the WizzAir Discount Club worth it?
Depends on how many flight youâre planning to take & how many people are traveling with you.
- If youâre traveling with someone or as an family, itâs definitely worth it.
- If youâre traveling alone, you need to take at least 2 flights to make it worth it.
Hereâs a calculator and the prices of current memberships Wizz Discount Club.
Beware of paying in euros (or any other currency)
When youâre buying a ticket on WizzAir website, you can choose the currency in which you want to pay. By default youâre paying in HUF and you should keep it like that.
Seems like a great feature so you donât need to convert HUF to EUR.
But did you noticed the message The proposed conversion rate may differ from officialâŚ? Thatâs because WizzAir is using a different exchange rate than the official one. And itâs not in your favor.
Hereâs an example of the same ticket in HUF and EUR from Budapest to Milan (return) on Apr 25 2024.
The price in HUF (Hungarian Forints) is 22 780 HUF. In Euros 61,92 EUR.
Current exchange rate for HUF to EUR is 1 EUR = 399,70 HUF - March 24 2024.
22 780 HUF / 399,70 HUF = 57,00 EUR
With just one click I almost managed to lose 5 EUR. And thatâs just for one ticket. Always pay in HUF.
Buying a luggage
There are multiple options when buying a flight. At the beggining they will try to sell you the most expensive one. But if you can resist you can pick the best budget option for yourself at the end.
You could pick the most expensive option - on budget flights usually more expensive than the whole flight.
Or just pick your flights with Basic - Travel Light option.
And now when we get to the end of the booking process, we can add the luggage which usually what youâre looking for.
You can adjust if you want it for both ways or just one-way. Most of the time when youâre going the best option is Wizz Priority. When you donât need checked-in luggage.
Getting âthe bestâ seat
I get it. When the ticket costs 10 EUR and the seat costs 5 EUR itâs a bit too much. Hereâs my âstrategyâ. Wait.
If you have the manual check-in you can check the seats in the flight summary.
In the last 24 hours you will need to check-in which means you will get an random seat assinged.
The best option so far is to wait till 6-3 hours before the flight and then continue with random seats allocation. Usually this work because all the other people that checked-in already got their seats assigned.
Be careful that the time of the check-in can change and you may want to do it a little bit earlier. Overall if more people will know about it will be even harder to get the best seat.
SELECT SEATS 4-6 hours before
In Wizz Air the option to check-in is from 24 hours before till 3 hours before the departure.
Getting on board
I never understood the Priority system because I felt better outside the plane on the fresh air. And even when I get into the plane I still need to wait for all the other people to get in.
If you picked just a backpack (Basic) you could expect the check from Airport staff because they earn the most money on it. If you couldnât fit it means you will be paying extra because it would ânot fitâ into the overhead compartment.
Well if you manage pass them I wish you all the luck with your flight. Without the turbulences and a good weather. đ
